TVET Department Reveals High Demand Diploma Courses
The State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Kenya recently revealed the diploma courses that have high job demand. While many students are rushing for undergraduate courses, the Principal Secretary (PS) for TVET, Esther Muoria, emphasized that the future of the country depends on TVET graduates.
She disclosed that the diploma courses in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are in high demand in the current job market, based on data from the national economic survey. According to her, skills obtained from STEM courses are the future of the economy, and students should register for them.
PS Muoria stated that the Ministry of Education predicts that TVET courses’ popularity will grow by over 8% by 2030. Recent events like the pandemic have changed work positioning in an unprecedented way, and as a result, the world has embraced technological skills faster than previously anticipated to manage the prevailing trends.
She added that students who enroll in STEM courses would be highly employable, primarily because the industrial revolution requires people to have STEM skills to undertake functions in the expanding digital economy and other related services.
STEM courses are classified into six clusters by The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), including Engineering and Technology, Environmental Sciences, Applied Sciences, Health Sciences, Food Science, and Computing and Information Technology.
Under Engineering and Technology, there are Agricultural Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Electrical Instrumentation and Control. The available courses under Environmental Sciences are a diploma in Environmental Science, and for Applied Sciences, there are Applied Biology, Analytical Chemistry, and Applied Statistics.
