TSC’s Virtual Lesson Implementation Will Not work In Kenya – KUPPET.
David Barasa, chairman of the Bungoma County Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), has disagreed with the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) decision to implement virtual lesson plans.
The plan enables schools to share teachers in a single lesson across multiple campuses.
TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia revealed that they have trained 163,000 teachers to deliver virtual lessons, which will be scaled up to cover the majority of schools.
Barasa claims that virtual lessons would fail because most schools are unable to access online services due to poor or non-existent internet connectivity.
“This is a noble idea,” Barasa said, but they should have ensured that Kenyan schools are well equipped with required facilities before the rollout,“
However, according to Barasa, teaching also entails teachers’ interactions and follow-up with students.
He says teaching is not about standing in front of a class and talking, dictating, and taking notes; a teacher must go deeper to ensure that students understand the concept.

He went on to say that after a lesson, the assignments should be graded to see if the students understood the concept. The teacher believes that virtual learning will leave many students blank.
He wondered how teachers will grade assignments following an online lesson if the tutor is in Machakos and the students are in Bungoma. ” I think this will not work in Kenya,” he said.“
According to Barasa, many schools lack the technology for online classes, and some parents may not be able to afford laptops and television sets to facilitate the exercise.

"There is an outcry from parents that CBC is burdensome as it requires a lot of resources for it to run smoothly,” he said.
