TSC’s internship program for new graduates rolled out.
To improve educational quality, the Teacher Service Commission has launched an internship program for recent graduates.
The program, which began last year, has so far reached approximately 28,300 new graduate teachers who have gone through real-time classroom experiences over a 12-month period.
TSC deputy director in charge of staffing Antonina Lentoijoni stated during the 17th Kenya Primary Schools Head Teachers Association Annual Delegates Meeting in Mombasa that the program aims to improve educational quality.
She stated that teachers who will be hired in schools starting next year will not be fresh out of college, but will have at least one year of experience and their skills will have been sharpened.
“Since last year, the commission has institutionalised the programme that will see new graduate teachers given a one-year supervised coaching to sharpen their skills, knowledge and attitude of teachers,” she said.
Last year, approximately 10,300 interns participated in the program, with an additional 12,000 expected this year.
The commission has arranged for 6,000 graduates to report to various schools beginning in January 2022.
“Every child deserves a quality teacher and quality education,” she said.
Approximately 229,000 teachers have been trained in the Competency-Based Curriculum so far.
Another 22,000 secondary school teachers have participated in the school-based teacher support system program in English, Math, and Science.
Over 55,000 primary school teachers have been trained, with a focus on mathematics teachers.
She stated that the commission had expanded the teacher development program to address new emerging challenges in the teaching profession.
The course has been approved for delivery at four different institutions of higher learning.
Mount Kenya University, Kenyatta University, Riara University, and the Kenya Education Management Institute are among them.
The four institutions have launched an online training program aimed at all teachers to ensure that they build their capacity to improve educational quality
The commission had institutionalized a mentorship and coaching program aimed at newly recruited teachers and appointed administrators, as well as teachers with professional gaps, to help them build their capacity.
They will be paired with an experienced teacher who will guide them through the process until they can do it on their own.

She stated that TSC was addressing the staffing issue in order to ensure that teachers were present in classrooms.
“The commission has lobbied for more funds from the government to recruit additional teachers to address the challenge of staffing in our schools and rolled out a plan to recruit 5000 new teachers annually,” she said.
