TSC Won’t Fire Non-Local Teachers Fleeing North-Eastern, Says Gachagua

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has promised teachers their safety throughout the country, including in high-risk regions.

Gachagua addressed the Kenya National Union of Teachers Union (KNUT) annual National Delegates Conference at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi on Wednesday, assuring attendees that robust security measures have been enacted. He emphasized that these measures are specifically designed to allow teachers to carry out their duties in hazardous areas without fear for their safety.

The Deputy President gave assurance that ongoing efforts are in place in affected regions to ensure the security not only of educators but also of the entire population throughout the country.

He also stated that the government has halted the dismissal of teachers who had fled their jobs due to insecurity in Northern Kenya.

“You cannot punish people who are running away to save their lives,” he went on to say.

Gachagua announced that Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki is actively handling the situation and ensuring the full implementation of the security measures.

The Deputy President emphasized the commitment of the National Police Service and other security agencies in taking necessary actions to ensure the safety of teachers and the entire Kenyan population.

He highlighted ongoing efforts, including a disarmament exercise aimed at eliminating criminals in specific areas. Additionally, he acknowledged the role of education in addressing long-term security challenges, aiming to transition communities away from regressive practices.

He asserted that the government is actively monitoring security situations in the North Rift and other terrorism-prone areas, affirming the commitment to persist until peace is fully reinstated.

The Deputy President, William Ruto, attended the event on behalf of President William Ruto, with nearly 2,000 representatives from all 47 counties present.

Gachagua praised teachers for their patriotism as well as their savings culture through cooperative societies to harness money for future financial stability.
