TSC Transfers All Six Teachers From Uasin Gishu School After Parents Assaulted Principal

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has transferred six teachers from St. Martin Mafuta Secondary School in Uasin Gishu County, responding to an incident last week where angered parents forcibly removed the school principal, attributing the school’s poor performance in the previous year’s national exams to the teaching staff.

This action suggests a growing trend, as it follows the recent transfer of 17 teachers from St. Gabriel Isonga Secondary School in Kakamega County after a similar attack by parents.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has criticized these occurrences, emphasizing that any measures taken should not compromise the fundamental right to education for students in affected institutions.

The leading student at Mafuta secured a D+, with the second-best achieving a D-, while the remaining candidates received an E.

Parents expressed their frustration at the time, saying, “Unalipa pesa 4 years mtoto akuje na D, how do you feel even if it is yourself?” David Wafula, the principal, and the director of studies were physically assaulted and driven away by local residents protesting against what they perceived as inadequate results in the previous year’s KCSE exams.

CS Machogu, speaking in Nairobi, condemned such incidents, asserting that evaluating results is not solely the responsibility of teachers but a collective duty of the community. He directed education officials to expedite investigations and submit a report on the incidents.

“Whatever your position in society, if you misbehave to that extent this country has structures, and you should be taken to court,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, CS Machogu ordered that any actions taken should not infringe upon the basic right to education for other learners in the affected schools.

“While the invasion of schools and attacks on teachers are unfortunate and cannot be tolerated, we must carefully adopt consultative means to ensure that we do not deprive children of their right to education,” noted Machogu.

Supporting these sentiments, Khwisero Member of Parliament Christopher Aseka, at an event in Kakamega County, expressed concerns about parents’ ability to afford the salaries of teachers employed by the school board of management (BOM).

“Sasa wazazi na watoto waanze kuandika walimu wa BOM inamaanisha pesa ya fees itaenda juu, lakini mimi kama mjumbe nasihi TSC reconsider your position. Hata kama wale wameenda tafutia Isongo walimu wengine,” Aseka advised.

Presently, the affected schools face a challenging situation with an insufficient number of teachers, as TSC appears determined to safeguard the safety of educators in schools.
