TSC Transfers 17 Teachers From Isongo Secondary School After Principal Ejection by Parents

Teachers from St. Gabriel Isongo School in Kakamega have been transfered by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) after sustained pressure from various stakeholders.

The transfer of 17 teachers occurred days after an incident where parents and students protested against the school’s principal due to the institution’s poor performance in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

The dissatisfaction expressed by parents prompted major teachers’ unions to advocate for the relocation of teachers or enhanced security measures for them.

Collins Oyuu, the Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), led the demands, asserting that teachers at St. Gabriel Isongo School and two other institutions were at risk of facing attacks. Oyuu emphasized the need to halt such actions, highlighting threats against head teachers and principals.

Similarly, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) National Chairperson, Omboko Milemba, called for decisive action against the perpetrators and urged increased security for teachers nationwide.

Milemba emphasized the urgency of addressing the situation within 24 hours, citing other affected schools like St Teresa’s Bumini and Kabondi Primary School.

Expressing concern for the workload faced by teachers at Isongo High School, Milemba noted that they served a student population exceeding 850 students. This raised additional concerns about the well-being and working conditions of the teachers.

Education CS Ezekiel Machogu responded a day later, issuing a warning to communities engaging in attacks against teachers.

He criticized the targeting of school administrators, emphasizing that they are just one part of the educational system and cannot be solely accountable for student performance. Machogu reminded communities that learner achievement is a collective effort involving parents, teachers, and students themselves.

Furthermore, Machogu highlighted that TSC assesses teachers’ performances through various metrics beyond national examinations, indicating a broader perspective on evaluating educators.

The CS’s statement aimed to discourage unwarranted attacks and promote a more comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing academic outcomes.
