TSC Teacher Interviews and Promotions Lack Transparency and Fairness, Says KNUT and KUPPET
The promotions merit list released by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has come under scrutiny from teachers’ unions, including the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet). Both unions have raised concerns about the lack of transparency and detailed information in the list.
Knut and Kuppet criticized the TSC for not providing the actual names corresponding to the TSC numbers published for audit purposes.
They argued that this omission could potentially allow deceased teachers to be included in the merit list. The unions are demanding an immediate response from the commission and have called for a meeting to address the issue.
Knut Secretary General Collins Oyuu expressed dissatisfaction with the promotions, citing numerous complaints from teachers about the criteria used for the interviews and promotions.
He emphasized the need for transparency in the process and called for clarification on the criteria employed by the TSC. Oyuu questioned the decision to publish TSC numbers without indicating the number of promotions in each grade and region, describing it as a questionable practice.

Oyuu said the list is “lacking transparency and fairness.”
Responding to the promotions list published on the TSC website, Oyuu highlighted the lack of transparency and fairness in the information provided. He raised concerns about qualified teachers being overlooked for promotions while others, seemingly unqualified, were being moved up the ranks.
Oyuu also questioned the exclusion of long-serving teachers who have remained in the same job group for years, contrasting their situation with new graduates who received promotions.
