TSC Seeks Ksh.14.8 Billion Budgetary Allocation to Address Teacher Shortage

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has appealed for an annual budgetary allocation of Ksh.14.8 billion to tackle the critical shortage of teachers in the country.

The CEO of TSC, Nancy Macharia, presented this request to the Senate’s National Cohesion Committee, emphasizing the need for an additional 111,870 teachers over the span of five years.

As of January 2023, the commission has managed to recruit only 30,000 teachers, leaving a substantial deficit to be filled.

Teacher Shortage Challenges

Macharia acknowledged that despite the commission’s efforts, there is still a significant shortage of teachers, with a demand for 47,329 primary level teachers and 64,541 teachers in post-primary institutions nationwide.

“The commission is faced with a teacher shortage of 111,870 teachers; 47,329 at primary level and 64,541 in post-primary institutions countrywide,” she said.

To bridge this gap, the government had previously announced plans to employ 35,000 teachers by September, particularly focusing on junior secondary schools where learning has been particularly challenging.

However, the current recruitment numbers fall short of the required figures, necessitating a renewed approach to address the situation.

Budgetary Allocation for the Next Five Years

The CEO of TSC, Nancy Macharia, stressed that an annual budgetary allocation of Ksh.14.8 billion is essential for the next five years to alleviate the teacher shortage.

This allocation would provide the necessary resources for recruiting and training teachers to meet the educational demands of the country.

However, there are concerns among committee members regarding the feasibility of securing the required funds for such an extensive recruitment drive.
