The Teacher Service Commission (TSC) is requesting funds from the government via Parliament in order to hire more teachers.
TSC Chair Dr Jamleck Muturi stated at the conclusion of the 17th annual Primary Head Teachers’ Delegates’ Conference in Mombasa that the commission will employ at least 5,000 teachers annually to address the teacher shortage.
TSC is currently facing a crisis because approximately 25,000 teachers aged 58 and up will retire in the next two years.
During the National Budget, Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani Kanacho proposed a Ksh 2.5 billion budget allocation to support teacher recruitment in the fiscal year 2021/2022.
The Chair stated that the commission is working with the National Government to increase funding for recruitment and staff balancing in educational institutions.
Dr Jamleck stated that the country’s schools are facing challenges due to a lack of infrastructure and learning materials at a time when the country is experiencing an economic crisis as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He lamented the moral decay in schools, which he blamed on a lack of mentorship, and urged school leaders to devise strategies to salvage and address the situation.
The Chair stated that ongoing training of teachers on CBC is fully funded by the government in order to address the gaps in the teaching fraternity.
The TSC Chair went on to say that the government is streamlining the education sector through TSC by automating services such as personnel recruitment, TSC registration, and leave application, among other things.
