TSC Recalls Bomet Education Director Amid Infighting
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has agreed to transfer its Director in charge of Bomet County, Ms Mary Kolla, after months of pressure from leaders and education stakeholders.
Dr William Yator Kibowen will take over Ms Kolla’s role while she has been recalled to the TSC headquarters. Dr Yator is expected to hand over his current role in Mandera County before heading to Bomet.
Ms Kolla and Mr Apollo Apuko, the previous Bomet County Director of Education, had been involved in disagreements over the implementation of education policies for over a year, which impacted the operations of primary and secondary schools in the county.
When one issued a memo to school managers, the other would counter with another memo, cancelling it and providing new directives. The government responded to concerns from leaders and education stakeholders by taking action against Ms Kolla and Mr Apuko.
In response to the issue, Dr Ahmed Omar, the Bomet County Commissioner, said that the government would take decisive action against the two officers.
The changes are expected to restore order in the sector, turn around the performance of students in national examinations, and boost the morale of teachers in primary and secondary schools in the county.
The changes come as the leadership of the County Education Board is expected to change, with the term of the current chairman, Dr Elias Kipngetich Kirui, having come to a close.
Board members have repeatedly called for the removal of Dr Kirui as chairperson for stability to prevail in the education sector and to inject professionalism in the management of learning institutions.
Dr Kirui has been accused of abdicating his duties and responsibilities, skipping more than four successive board meetings without apology, failing to provide leadership in the board, and failing to consult members to strike a consensus on key issues affecting the education sector in the last year.
Candidates have already been invited to apply for the position of chairman of the board, with candidates expected to satisfy Chapter six of the constitution on leadership and integrity to be considered for the vacancy.
Leaders and stakeholders hope that the two new directors, Mr Ndungu and Dr Yator, will work together and seek to improve the standards of education in the county with the support of all stakeholders.
Leaders have stated that they want results-oriented officers in the county, and that government officers working in the county should be results-oriented.
The current crop of elected leaders in the county is committed to improving the standards of education in learning institutions to increase transition rates to universities and colleges.
