TSC P1 Promotion Application for Teachers to Junior Secondary School Set to Close
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced the closure of the application portal for the promotion of P1 teachers to junior school.
The commission opened the online application portal following an advertisement of 6,000 deployment slots for serving primary school teachers with a degree in the secondary option. The deadline for applications is 18th March 2024.
Qualified primary school teachers willing to teach Grade 7, 8, and 9 are urged to apply before the portal closes tomorrow midnight.

The Commission plans to deploy the third batch of qualified PTE teachers to teach in junior school starting May 2024. Successful applicants will be posted to schools immediately after their documents are verified by their Sub-County Directors.
However, the Commission will scrutinize the documents at the headquarters to ensure that only qualified teachers with valid documents are posted.
In January, the TSC acknowledged the severe teacher shortage in junior secondary schools, with Chief Executive Nancy Macharia stating that the schools require 99,045 teachers against the current number of 56,928.
Teachers who are qualified are urged to apply for deployment by 18th March. Requirements for primary school teachers wishing to be deployed to JSS include active registration as a teacher with the Teachers Service Commission, employment as a primary school teacher with the TSC, and not being under interdiction or undergoing a disciplinary process.
Additionally, candidates must have a minimum of a Diploma in Education with a minimum of C+ at KCSE, among other qualifications.

Deployment
The first and second cohorts of P1 teachers were already deployed. They underwent document verification by their Sub-county Directors and were issued with deployment (posting) letters to junior secondary.
The teachers were deployed to start teaching Grade 7 and 8 learners who are part of the junior secondary school section. However, the majority of the deployed teachers took longer before starting to enjoy their new salaries.
In a circular dated 17th February 2023, the TSC received a total of 10,833 requests from qualified primary school teachers for deployment to Junior Secondary Schools.
To expedite payment for the deployed teachers, TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia gave clear directives to Sub-County Directors and Primary Headteachers regarding the release and receiving of the teachers.
Dr. Macharia ordered Heads of Institution releasing the teachers to immediately exit them through the submission of Exit Reports to enable the receiving Head of Institution to submit the Entry Report.

All these processes are to be conducted online through the Posting, Entry/Exit Reports Module.
The Commission is under pressure to deploy more teachers to junior secondary to address the serious teacher shortage currently experienced.
Most deployed teachers are primary school teachers in job group C1, while others are in job groups C3 and C4. Those deployed (with degree certificates) will be placed at job group C2 where they will serve for a period of three years before being moved automatically to job group C3.
Salary
Salary details for a deployed C2 teacher include a basic salary of 34,955, house allowance (other areas) of 7,500, hardship allowance of 10,900, commuter allowance of 5,000, and leave allowance (paid only in January) of 6,000.
The Commission has ordered the Sub-County Directors to ensure that the teachers are deployed to their current stations or those close to their current stations.
