TSC Maternity Leave Form for Teachers; Step by Step Application
In Kenya, teachers who are expecting a child have the right to maternity leave to ensure the well-being of both the mother and the newborn.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has specific guidelines and forms for applying for maternity leave.

Applying for Maternity Leave: Step by Step
A female teacher is entitled to 90 calendar days of maternity leave from the date of confinement.
This leave is exclusive of annual leave. The application for leave should be submitted to the DEO, MEO, or DCE through the head of institution at least one month before the leave is due and must have supporting medical documents.
Paternity Leave
A male teacher can apply for paternity leave of up to 10 days within the period of his spouse’s maternity leave.
If a teacher has multiple wives, they will be eligible for leave based on the spouse whose name is listed on the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) Card.

To apply for leave, teachers should submit the application through the head of their institution to the DEO, MEO, or County Education Officer (DCE), along with a letter confirming the spouse’s confinement.
Obtain the Maternity Leave Application Form
Obtain the Maternity Leave Application Form from the TSC website or download it at the bottom of this article. This form should be completed in triplicate.
Complete Part I of the Application Form
In Part I of the application form, provide the following details:
- Your full name (Mrs. or Miss)
- Your TSC Number
- Your spouse’s name
- The expected start date of your maternity leave
- Sign and date the application

Visit a Medical Officer
A medical officer must fill out Part II of the application form. Schedule a medical examination with a qualified medical practitioner, and they will provide a certificate confirming your pregnancy and the expected date of confinement.
Ensure that the medical officer has stamped, signed, and dated the certificate.
Submit the Application
Once Part I and Part II of the application form are complete, submit the application in triplicate to your school’s principal or headteacher.
Make sure to submit the application a minimum of one month before the scheduled start of your maternity leave.

Wait for Approval
Your school’s principal or head teacher will review your application and forward it to the TSC County Director for approval.
The approval process may take some time, so it’s essential to submit your application well in advance.
Maternity Leave Period
If TSC approves your application, you will have three months of maternity leave, commencing from the date you specified in your application and medical certificate.
Important Notes:
- A teacher applying for maternity leave will not be eligible for annual leave during the same year.
- Ensure that you submit the birth notification before you resume work after your maternity leave.
