TSC Intern Teachers Protest, Demand Permanent and Pensionable Employment

A section of intern teachers specializing in primary and secondary education from Tharaka Nithi County has expressed their desire for employment conditions that are permanent and eligible for pension.

According to the teachers, a prior agreement for permanent terms with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has not been honored.

During a demonstration on Thursday, the interns carried placards and chanted, “No confirmation, no renewal. The promise must be honoured.”

In primary schools, they have also expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of specialized equipment required for JSS lessons.

One of the protestors, Linda Nkatha, stated, “We had an agreement to serve as interns for one year, after which we would be offered permanent contracts. “This, nevertheless, has yet to be implemented.”

Another educator, Theophilos Mugambi, remarked, “We are perplexed as to how the narrative underwent a transformation. Our intended contracts were permanent, but instead we are being treated as if we were offspring of a lesser deity.

A branch representative of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Mambo Misiani, stated that the union supported the teachers and urged TSC to uphold the agreement that had been previously negotiated.

The protest follows another teacher protest in Homa Bay County on Wednesday. Teachers from Homa Bay County staged a demonstration in which they threatened to stop working if the government failed to confirm their permanent, pensionable employment.
