TSC Highlights P1 Teachers’ Retooling

P1 instructors who graduated prior to 2019 and are not hired by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) reportedly started a nine-month upgrading program in 2019 to upgrade their P1 Certificates to a Diploma Level.

After being hired, these educators go through a thorough retraining program that equips them with the skills necessary to successfully execute the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). TSC highlighted that they continue to hire teachers with P1 certificates who have not sought the diploma upgrade in order to support inclusivity and non-discrimination.

In response to a query on whether TSC will give preference to P1 certificate holders when hiring new instructors after they advance to the Diploma level, the commission indicated that it is an equal opportunity employer that complies with regulatory requirements.

To ensure that the recruitment process is conducted legitimately and upholds the rights and freedoms specified in the Constitution, TSC has prepared Recruitment Guidelines. These guidelines outline the competences and skill sets needed for hiring.

TSC has also created a Recruitment Score Card in accordance with these recruitment guidelines. This scorecard takes into account all relevant characteristics, including age, period of stay since teacher qualification, CBC upgrade, and professional qualifications. Teachers who have finished the diploma upgrade program receive better marks on a sample scorecard provided by the commission.
