The Teachers Service Commission confirmed on Monday that there is a shortage of 114,581 teachers in Kenya’s primary and secondary schools.
TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, speaking at the release of the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations, attributed the shortage to increased enrolment due to an increase in the number of school-age children, the 100% transition policy, registration of new schools, and natural attrition factors.
At the same time, Macharia thanked the government for finding resources to allow the commission to hire an average of 5,000 teachers for public schools each year.
TSC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nancy Macharia has also revealed that so far, total number of teachers trained for the CBC are 229,292.
