TSC Gets Sh4.8 Billion to Recruit 20,000 teachers

To address the teacher shortage in public and secondary schools, approximately 20,000 teachers will be recruited.

Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung’u stated that the government has allocated Sh4.8 billion for the employment of additional intern teachers.

Dr. Nancy Macharia, the chief executive officer of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), assured teachers that, if funds are available, the commission will hire at least 25,000 teachers annually for the next five years.

Last year there was a teacher shortage of 116,000, but this year the government hired 36,000 teachers.

The number of students in institutions has increased since the implementation of free primary education and daytime secondary education.

The number of students enrolled in public primary schools increased from 8,488,274 in the academic year 2019/20 to 8,852,266 in the fiscal year 2021/2.

Teachers’ unions have recently urged the government to hire more teachers and promote those who have remained in the same job category.

The Secretary General of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet), Akelo Misori, expressed how discouraging the situation is for teachers.

“Teachers have been serving in acting capacities for many years, and nobody bothers to progressively move them to the next level. This has greatly frustrated them to the extent that they cannot apply for any vacancy when announced,” Misori said.

Compared to the previous year’s budget, the education sector has received the most funding, Sh628.6 billion.

According to Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung’u, this quantity represents approximately 27.4% of the government’s total budget estimates of Sh3.6 trillion.

In the previous fiscal year, the sector received Sh544.4 billion out of a total budget of Sh3.31 trillion, or 16.44 percent.

This indicates that the education sector is one of this year’s largest budget beneficiaries.
