Lawmakers have approved an additional allocation of Sh2.2 billion to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for the promotion of teachers.

The Budget and Appropriations Committee (BAC) proposed the allocation in the report of the Budget Policy Statement (BPS) to allow TSC to promote about 14,000 teachers who have been stuck in one position despite having higher qualifications.

The commission plans to promote 13,713 principals, deputy principals, senior masters, secondary teachers, head teachers, and deputy head teachers in primary and secondary schools.

The vacancies with the highest numbers are for Deputy Head Teacher II in regular primary schools, which has 7,720 posts.

TSC will also promote 2,733 head teachers for regular primary schools, 1,330 secondary teacher I, 725 deputy principal II, 602 principals for regular schools, 224 deputy principal III for secondary schools, and some 208 Senior Master II.

In addition, there were 73 vacancies for regular secondary school chief principals, 32 head teachers for Special Needs Education (SNE), 22 Deputy Head teachers for SNE schools, 17 posts for deputy principal I, eight principals for SNE, and four chief principles for SNE schools.

TSC had advertised 1,020 vacancies for teachers deployed as principals, deputy principals, teachers, and deputy head teachers in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands and hard-to-staff counties.

The BAC also increased the budget of the State Department for Basic Education to Sh134.92 billion, and that of TSC to Sh322.64 billion, up from Sh298 billion in the current financial year, to enable them to take care of the Competency-Based Curriculum as well as Junior Secondary School.

The additional allocation is good news for tutors who have been stuck in one job group for a long time. With higher qualifications, these teachers have been looking for promotions but have been unable to secure them due to a lack of vacancies.

This allocation will help TSC to promote these teachers and fill the vacancies in various positions in primary and secondary schools. The move will help to improve the quality of education in the country and enhance the career prospects of deserving teachers.
