TSC Faces Staffing Crisis with 42,000 JSS Teachers Shortage – Nancy Macharia
Approximately 20,000 new teachers are set to be recruited by the government to address staffing shortages in junior secondary schools, as acknowledged by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Nancy Macharia, the Chief Executive, reported that these schools currently face a shortage of 42,117 teachers, with 99,045 needed and only 56,928 currently available.

Despite the commencement of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) pioneer class in Grade 8 and the second JSS class, the hiring of additional teachers is not expected until July when schools reopen.
Dr. Macharia stated that the government is consistently allocating funds to schools to gradually bridge the staffing gap. In the next financial year, the TSC has requested funds to employ an additional 20,000 teachers.
Currently, primary schools have an excess of 18,194 teachers, and the TSC plans to redistribute them to understaffed schools to maintain the recommended teacher-learner ratio of 1:40.

The shortage of teachers at junior secondary level has increased due to the addition of Grade 8. Additionally, there are plans to promote 36,505 teachers to upper job grades, with 17,514 primary school tutors and 18,591 post-primary teachers set to benefit.
Intern teachers who handled the new grade last year have voiced concerns over poor terms, working conditions, and unfulfilled promises of permanent employment, leading some to threaten not to resume duty this month.
