TSC Condemns mushrooming of schools, Blames it for teachers shortage.
According to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the mushrooming of schools in the country has contributed to a teacher shortage.
According to TSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nancy Macharia, the mushrooming of schools is putting a strain on the existing facilities, which are insufficient for students.
She stated yesterday at the National Schools Conference in Kisumu that, while TSC is responsible for ensuring optimal staffing in all schools, teacher shortages have been exacerbated by the mushrooming of schools and student enrolment as a result of the Ministry of Education’s 100% transition directive.
According to Dr Macharia, the mushrooming of schools is only recommended in hardship areas where institutions are far apart. She claims that upcoming schools near those with over 100% enrolment are complicating staffing.
she gave an example of a girls’ school and a mixed school in the same neighbourhood. The girls’ school has a large enrollment, whereas the mixed school has only one stream with 50 students. In this case, teachers are required because the children are learning the entire curriculum.
“So what happens is we get a headteacher and two other teachers from the girls’ school, and as a result understaff the girls’ school which also needs all those teachers,” Macharia explained.
“Meanwhile, the ministry takes a chemistry teacher to that mixed school yet it does not even have a laboratory.”
She stated that the mushrooming of schools should be limited in order for TSC to adequately staff one school to serve the catchment area of a specific area.
Despite the complete transition, TSC receives funding each year to hire only 5,000 teachers, according to Macharia.
