TSC Boss Nancy Macharia Discusses Priorities in Latest Teacher Recruitment Drive.
Dr. Nancy Macharia, the CEO of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), has provided insights into the commission’s recent efforts regarding the recruitment of 20,000 intern teachers, a process that was concluded recently.
These teachers are set to report in January, marking the next phase in strengthening Kenya’s education system. The recruitment drive, which concluded earlier, has seen a targeted approach to address specific gaps in the teaching profession.
Prioritizing Science and Technical Teachers
One of the key points raised by Dr. Macharia was the focus on recruiting science and technical subject teachers. She emphasized that there had been widespread feedback regarding the perceived preference for Arts teachers in past recruitment exercises.
In response to this, the TSC made deliberate efforts to prioritize the recruitment of science teachers in the recent hiring process.
Dr. Macharia explained, “As you know, there have been comments here and there that we have been recruiting only Arts teachers. So, this recruitment prioritized the recruitment of science teachers.”

She went on to explain that this move was in direct response to the need for students to receive a broader education, particularly in the growing fields of science and technology.
The aim was to ensure students have access to a wide range of learning areas, not only focusing on the sciences but also including technical subjects. This strategy, according to Dr. Macharia, will enhance the depth and breadth of education offered to students across the country.

Commitment to Seamless Transition
In her remarks, Dr. Macharia further highlighted the commission’s commitment to ensuring that the transition for the newly recruited teachers is as smooth as possible.
She noted that the TSC was working diligently to guarantee that these teachers are adequately prepared for their roles.
“We are working very hard to ensure that we get there and that these teachers are transitioned seamlessly,” Dr. Macharia said.
This emphasis on smooth transitions underscores the TSC’s dedication to supporting its staff and ensuring they are fully equipped to provide quality education.
As the country prepares for the new school year, the efforts to recruit teachers in science and technical disciplines reflect a forward-thinking approach to addressing the evolving needs of Kenya’s education sector.
