The Government has intensified efforts to streamline Kenya’s education sector through the implementation of recommendations from the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms.

A key component of this initiative involves harmonizing the distinct roles of the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), particularly in teacher training, quality assurance in education, and enhancing the accountability of education managers in the use of public resources.

To actualize this harmonization, a framework agreement has been signed between the Ministry of Education and the TSC. The event was presided over by senior government officials, including Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, TSC Chairman Dr. Jamleck Muturi John, and TSC CEO Nancy Macharia.

In line with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) – THE PLAN, the government reaffirmed its commitment to restructuring the education sector to match the demands of an increasingly competitive and complex global environment.

Key achievements under this strategy include the employment of 76,000 teachers towards a target of 116,000 by 2027, and the successful implementation of a revised Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) after public consultation.

Additional milestones include the establishment of the National Open University, a smooth transition into the Junior Secondary School curriculum, and the adoption of systems for Recognition of Prior Learning and the Dual Training policy in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVETs).

The funding model for universities and tertiary institutions is also being continuously refined to enhance access to affordable, high-quality, and relevant education.

The government announced that the implementation of remaining reforms will be fast-tracked. These include upgrading the Kenya Education Information Management System (KEMIS), establishing at least one National Polytechnic in every county, and addressing the high number of unemployed qualified teachers.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba presented a detailed progress report on the education reforms, accompanied by the heads of various agencies within the Ministry of Education, affirming the government’s resolve to fulfill all education sector commitments.
