TSC Admits Staffing Shortage As More Teachers Pursue Diploma Courses
TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia stated that there has been a staffing shortage since the introduction of the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) last year.
The first and second cohorts of trainees were admitted in May and October of last year.
According to Ms Macharia, the crisis was also exacerbated by the readmission of unemployed P1 teachers and nursery school teachers to upgrade their certificates.
The two groups are studying for the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and the Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE).
“The net effect is on teacher requirements to meet the demands of the Competency-Based Teacher Education (CBTE) and the expanded learning areas. This demand is further aggravated by the annual retirement of lecturers and the recent promotion of lecturers to take up positions in secondary schools,” said Dr Macharia.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR UPGRADING TO DIPLOMA IN EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHER EDUCATION (DECTE)
– The applicant must possess a valid ECDE Certificate.
– The applicant must be registered by the Teachers Service Commission.
– The duration of the Course shall be 1890 Hours,The course shall be fully residential.
– The trainee shall take all courses specified in the upgrading programme of Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE)The trainees shall undertake a Teaching Practicum of 300 Hours.
– To be awarded the Diploma, the trainee must complete the required hours for Course Work and pass the stipulated assessment by the Kenya National Examination Council.
– Applicants shall be required to produce evidence of adherence to positive moral values and go. behaviour.

– The trainee shall take all courses specified in the upgrading programme of Diploma in Primary Teacher Education.
– The trainees shall undertake a Teaching Practicum of 300 Hours, to be awarded the Diploma, the trainee must complete the required hours for Course Work and pass the stipulated assessment by the Kenya National Examination Council.
– Applicants shall be required to produce evidence of adherence to positive moral values and good behavior.
According to the Teachers Service Commission, the country requires 103,000 teachers to address the current shortage and fully implement the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) system.
As a result, TSC is hiring 130 trainers who will be assigned to one of the 35 Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs).
Another 24 teachers will be hired to supplement the teaching staff at the Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education (CEMASTEA).
This brings the total number of required personnel to 154.
“To mitigate this demand, the vacancies will be filled competitively by interested qualified teachers from secondary schools. Vacancies in secondary schools will be filled by teacher exits for the period June 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021,” said Macharia.
According to TSC, the aforementioned vacancies will be filled solely for deployment and not for promotion and will entail document validation.
“Interested candidates, who meet the requirements, should submit their applications online not later than January 25,” reads the communication.
Those who will be deployed to CEMASTEA must have at least a C4, T-Scale 9, Senior Master IV grade.
They must also have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Science) or its equivalent, as well as at least three years of experience as a County Trainer-CEMASTEA.
Successful candidates must also have demonstrated professionalism and high performance, as well as proficiency in computer literacy and ICT integration in the classroom. They must also have participated in the performance evaluation process.
Those who will be deployed to TTCs must also have a minimum grade of C4, T-Scale 9, Senior Master IV.
They should also have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or its equivalent and have participated in the performance evaluation process.
Thirteen of those who will be deployed to TTCs will teach mathematics, with a similar number also teaching agriculture.
18 teachers will be assigned to teach music, and 17 will be assigned to teach home science.
