TSC Addresses JSS Teachers Salary Delay

According to a statement released by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on April 30th, 2023, approximately half of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers who had been deployed throughout the country had not received their salaries yet.

Out of 35,550 teachers who were posted to different schools between February and March of that year, only 50% had been paid in full.

The TSC claimed that the delay in payment was due to some teachers reporting to their respective schools later than others, causing a hold-up in the processing of their salaries.

In response to the delay, the TSC requested that teachers who had already received their salaries confirm receipt of payment through their banks. Additionally, the TSC apologized for any inconvenience caused by the delay, promising that all salaries would be paid by May 2023.

The Commission also urged teachers to contact the Director of Human Resource Management and Development if they had any further questions or concerns.

The delay in salary payments caused concern among education stakeholders, particularly as the first term of the premier CBC class came to an end. On April 23rd, the inaugural cohort of Junior Secondary School (JSS) tutors highlighted the crisis in the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) due to the delayed salaries. As a result, the Ministry of Education was called upon to intervene in the situation.

Despite the delay, the Ministry of Education had announced on April 14th, 2023 that it had released Free Secondary Education (FSE) funds for JSS. This announcement was seen as a positive step towards promoting quality education and equal opportunities for all students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

In conclusion, the delay in salary payments to JSS teachers highlights the challenges facing the education sector in Kenya. The TSC’s promise to pay all outstanding salaries by May 2023 is a welcome development, but it is important for education stakeholders to continue to advocate for improved working conditions and support for teachers, who play a critical role in shaping the future of the country.
