Tharaka Nithi: Parents Protest Over School’s Poor Performance, Demand Transfer Of Headteacher

Parents of Kiunguni Primary School in Tharaka Nithi County recently staged a protest over the deteriorating state of the school and mismanagement from the school’s management.

The protest, which took place on Tuesday, involved parents marching around the school premises, expressing their dissatisfaction with the headteacher and deputy’s actions.

“Our children are failing and we cannot transfer them anywhere else, this is our school.“ Said a parent.

Mismanagement Complaints

The parents accused the headteacher of cutting down trees and selling them to charcoal sellers.

They also complained about the deputy headteacher’s unresponsiveness to their complaints, which included concerns about the school’s lack of progress despite their contributions.

According to Citizen Digital, Douglas Murithi, a concerned parent, stated that the school’s poor state is affecting their children’s academic performance, and the parents cannot afford to transfer their children to other schools.

He added that they have leased land to raise money to build classrooms and have already acquired building materials, but no progress has been made.

Calls for Transfer of Headteacher

Jacinta Kagendo, another parent, called for the transfer of the headteacher and deputy headteacher, stating that the deputy headteacher was also complicit in the mismanagement.

The parents’ complaints fell on deaf ears, as reporters who arrived at the school to cover the protest were chased away by the deputy headteacher.

Efforts to speak to the Tharaka South Education coordinator regarding the issue have been unfruitful.

The parents’ calls for the transfer of the headteacher and deputy headteacher have not been addressed.
