TEVET Colleges in Nyandarua Struggle with Low Enrollment Despite Govt Efforts.

Technical and Vocational Colleges (TEVET) in Nyandarua County are facing a significant challenge of low enrollment, despite the government’s efforts to invest millions of shillings in the sector.

The low numbers have led to the underutilization of equipment deployed to the institutions, with stakeholders making concerted efforts to attract students to enroll in the colleges.

Ndaragwa MP, George Gachagua, attributed the low enrollment to a lack of information and inadequate awareness about the importance of technical courses.

Speaking during the new intake and graduation ceremony of students undertaking computer courses at the Ndaragwa Technical and Vocational Training Centre, the MP noted that the government had invested heavily in these institutions.

He emphasized the need for parents and young people to embrace technical courses adding that with the required skills, students can create job opportunities for themselves and also secure employment in the growing industry.

Similarly, the Deputy Principal of Ndaragwa TVTC, Lucy Mbomboti, highlighted the opportunities available for students who enroll in technical courses.

She emphasized that the government-subsidized fees for all students who enroll with the Higher Education Loans Board, with the government paying Ksh30,000 for every student, and the remaining Ksh26,000 spread across the three terms.

Additionally, students would automatically qualify for HELB loans of up to Ksh40,000, which would help to clear the fee balances and upkeep.

The low enrollment in TEVET institutions is not unique to Nyandarua County, as it is a national problem that has persisted for years.

According to a report by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector has been facing a shortage of students despite the growing demand for skilled workers.

The report indicated that only 10% of high school graduates enroll in TVET institutions, with the majority opting for universities.

The low enrollment in TEVET institutions is a significant challenge for the country as it impedes economic growth and development.
