Dr Julius Jwan, Principal Secretary of the State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education, has assured that the government is on track to increase secondary school capacity in the country to ensure a smooth transition to the new curriculum.
The PS stated that the government has put in place a lot of infrastructure for students who complete their secondary education to continue their education at the tertiary level.
“Higher education has been diversified in that students have been given a platform to join technical institutes and national polytechnics, if they do not qualify for universities,” he added.
Jwan explained to students planning to enrol in technical training institutes that they will automatically receive Sh30,000 as government capitation and access to Sh40,000 from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) to help pay for their studies.
This is to ensure that students are not stranded after completing Form Four due to a lack of funds.
The PS was speaking after officially commissioning a Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) classroom at Waso Secondary School in Isiolo County.
He assured all of the school heads in attendance that the target of 10,000 classrooms would be met by June.
“This is the new education system in Kenya that is currently set to replace the 8-4-4 education set-up. The system was introduced in 2017 after a long research and development by Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD),” Jwan explained.

Construction of CBC classrooms is currently underway in secondary schools across the country, with the goal of supporting the 100% transition policy and accommodating more students by 2023 when the CBC Grade Six (6) candidates of 2022 will transition to Junior Secondary School.
The PS commended Isiolo County Commissioner Geoffrey Omoding, who chairs the Multi-Sectoral Team on project oversight and development, for ensuring that construction is completed on time.
