A recent incident in Bungoma Town has caught the attention of the police, as an accountant at a technical training institute was robbed of more than Sh400,000 shortly after withdrawing the cash from a local bank.
On May 18, at around midday, the accountant visited a nearby bank and withdrew Sh504,000.
Accompanied by an instructor from the college’s driving school, she then removed Sh56,000 from the total amount and sent it to the institute’s principal before their return journey to the school.
However, their trip was abruptly disrupted in the Romina area, where they encountered a white salon car occupied by five individuals.
According to the victims’ accounts, four of the assailants were dressed in traffic police uniforms, while the driver wore civilian attire.
As the car blocked their path, two of the alleged officers disembarked, brandishing a pocket phone and handcuffs.
They claimed to be searching for a woman suspected of transporting illegal drugs.
Subsequently, the attackers seized the accountant’s handbag, which contained Sh446,861 in cash, her ID card, bank slips, and the ignition keys to their vehicle.
To intimidate them, one of the assailants even revealed an AK47 rifle before the group swiftly fled the scene.
The police have initiated an investigation into the incident, which remains ongoing.
No arrests have been made thus far, and the stolen money has yet to be recovered.
The investigative team suspects that the perpetrators could be either corrupt police officers or imposters pretending to be law enforcement personnel.
Similar incidents have been reported in the area and are currently under investigation.
In a separate incident, authorities are also looking into a theft that occurred at the director of agriculture offices in Murangá County.
Managers reported that on May 17, after securely locking the doors and leaving for the day, they returned the following day to find the doors still locked.
However, upon opening the offices, they discovered that four CPUs and four monitors from the director’s office, as well as one CPU with a monitor from the planning department, were missing.
The police have begun an investigation into this theft as well. The motive behind the crime and the identity of the perpetrators remain unknown at this time.
