Teacher’s Sewing of Student’s Torn Uniform Inspires Kindness, Gives Sonko Sleepless Night.
A heartwarming photo of a primary school teacher sewing a torn uniform for one of her pupils has gone viral in Kenya.
The photo, taken on Tuesday, May 9th, shows Madam Joyce Sempela Malit, a teacher at Siyiapei Primary School in Narok County, helping a young Grade Three pupil whose school uniform had been torn while playing during break time.
The pupil, wrapped in a leso, looks on as Madam Sempela sews up the holes in her uniform. The photo quickly captured the attention of many Kenyans, including former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who is known for his philanthropic side.
Sonko, who says he did not sleep well after seeing the photo, has pledged to help the young girl.

He is now seeking the details of the school or the parents of the pupil in order to provide her with five sets of school uniforms, rubber shoes, official school shoes, food, and school supplies for at least six months, as well as to clear any outstanding school fees.
“I need details of this school or her parents contacts I just want to buy her 5 sets of school uniforms, rubber shoes, official school shoes, her food and school shopping for at least 6months and clear any of her outstanding school fees,” he adds.
Madam Sempela, who has been a teacher since 1989, says that she always carries a needle and thread in her handbag and couldn’t bear to see the young girl in a torn uniform.
She decided to sew her dress, even closing the door and using her leso to cover the pupil in case anyone peeped through the windows.
“I closed the door, took my leso, removed her dress and tied her with my leso in case somebody peeped through the windows… The child is young and her home is very far so I couldn’t have released the child half naked,” said the teacher.
