Teachers Service Commission (TSC) To Promote 36,505 Teachers
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is currently in the process of promoting 36,505 teachers to various grades, with the majority being moved from C2 to D5 grades within this financial year.
In the announcement made during the release of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education results, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia shared that out of these promotions, 17,914 will be primary school teachers, while 18,591 will be post-primary teachers.
Reportedly, interviews for primary school teachers took place in December 2023, and those for post-primary teachers are ongoing, set to conclude this month.

Macharia encouraged all shortlisted teachers to attend the interviews at their respective sub-county levels across the country, emphasizing the commission‘s commitment to conducting a fair and efficient exercise that upholds meritocracy in promotions.
The TSC head disclosed that the year 2024 has seen the emergence of several vacancies at the principal level due to factors such as natural attrition, the establishment of new schools, or personal reasons, including medical concerns.
To ensure the smooth operation of institutions, the commission has taken steps to fill 198 vacant positions in various schools this year.
Addressing affected principals, she urged them to quickly settle down and ensure a seamless initiation of normal school programs in the current month. Additionally, she mentioned the upcoming admission of Form One students scheduled to commence on February 15, 2024.
The Commission acknowledged that the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in primary and junior schools has altered staffing patterns, leading to a reduction in the number of classrooms.

Consequently, there has been a notable decrease in the demand for teachers in primary schools, resulting in a surplus of 18,194 staff. The Commission’s strategy involves redistributing these teachers across schools to achieve a more balanced and reduced teacher-pupil ratio in all institutions.
The TSC is consistently assessing its systems and staff distribution at both primary and post-primary levels to ensure an equitable allocation of teachers nationwide.
Notably, the implementation of the CBC in primary and Junior Schools has led to adjustments in staffing levels. Specifically, two classes (Standard 7 and 8) have been eliminated in primary schools due to these changes.
The TSC head highlighted that the introduction of an extra class in 2024 (Grade 8) at the Junior School level has created a shortage of 42,117 staff members in this grade.

However, she expressed optimism, stating that the government is progressively allocating funds to the TSC for the recruitment of additional teachers until optimal levels are attained.
In the upcoming financial year, the TSC has sought funds for an additional 20,000 teachers.
