Teachers Ready for Junior Secondary CBC, TSC Affirms, Thanks to Retraining Programs.
The CEO of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Dr. Nancy Macharia, has elaborated on the ongoing efforts to enhance the skills of Kenyan teachers through continuous retooling programs.
She highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring that educators are well-prepared to navigate the evolving demands of the education sector, particularly with the shift to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Dr. Macharia emphasized that the government, through TSC, has been proactive in supporting the professional development of teachers.
She remarked, “Our teachers are very well-trained and equipped with the necessary skills, and this was evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when they adapted to the challenges seamlessly.”
She continued by noting that despite the teachers’ well-established capabilities, the government recognized the need for an additional layer of training to align with the reforms in education.

The TSC has been allocated funds specifically for retooling teachers, focusing on curriculum-based and competency-based assessments, which began in earnest in 2019.
Retraining Efforts and Achievements
Dr. Macharia shared detailed statistics about the retooling efforts. Between April 2019 and September 2021, a total of 229,292 teachers were trained to ensure a smooth transition to the new CBC system.
She also highlighted that more recent efforts have continued with a focus on preparing teachers for the integration of Junior Secondary.
“Between May and November 2024, a total of 6,642 teachers were trained, with the final training session taking place in November this year to prepare them for transitioning learners to grade nine,” she said.
This ongoing training reflects the TSC’s commitment to ensuring that teachers are well-equipped for each phase of the new educational model.
Addressing Challenges and Continuous Improvement
While acknowledging the success of these initiatives, Dr. Macharia also addressed the inevitable challenges that accompany any major system change. She acknowledged that, “There have been challenges, as is common with any new system, but these teething problems are part of the process.”
Despite these hurdles, she reassured that TSC is committed to continuously addressing these issues and refining the system to ensure that teachers are fully supported.
