Teachers in Viral Assault Video Pleads Not Guilty
Monday, two Standard Eight teachers accused of assaulting and causing physical injury to a 14-year-old candidate rejected the allegations.
Mr. Paul Osogo and Ms. Maurine Otieno, teachers of Nyamninia Primary School in Gem sub-county, appeared before Siaya Magistrate Lester Simiyu, accused of assaulting Bravin Ochido for failing to achieve a test score of 400.
A viral amateur video of the youngster screaming in pain with bruises all over his back led to their arrest. Later, they were released on a police bond.
“Life is hard in that school. We are served very little food and the teachers want us to perform well. Why are they caning me? The marks I achieved is what I am capable of. Why must I be beaten for not getting 400 marks?” lamented the child.
The teachers pled to charges after failing to appear in court three times.
The pupil’s father, Mr. Duncan Ochido, had complained about police carelessness in bringing the suspects to justice.
The teachers were expected to be arraigned on July 25, but this did not occur since the prosecutor’s office was still holding the case files.
Ms. Beatrice Auma, a children’s officer for Gem sub-county, has opened a care and protection file for the kid in accordance with Section 144 (Q) and (Y) of the Children Act.
Ms. Auma explained that the file is required to shield the child from the traumatic experiences he endured as a result of the assault.
“The child will also need counseling in the future because other students will make fun of him,” .
Last Monday, the child’s father, through prosecutor Lucas Kubebea, requested an out-of-court settlement, but his request was denied.

Ms. Auma also requested that the court proceed with the case and urged the magistrate to act in the child’s best interest.
The teacher’s requests for bond will be heard on Tuesday, the magistrate said as he ordered their remand.
