Kirinyaga County police have revealed that a female primary school teacher whose body was discovered in a well in Kandongu village committed suicide.

Detectives from Kiamaciri police station recovered a suicide note from the deceased’s house in Kandongu village, according to Mwea West sub-county police commander Wilson Koskei.

Nancy Wangithi Karuria, 56, was discovered floating in a well by residents on Wednesday morning.

Karuria had spoken with her son, Muriithi, who lives near Kandongu shopping center, 2 kilometers away, according to Koskei.

“Muriithi was shocked about his mother going missing, with her phone left in the house and the door open,” Koskei said.

According to Koskei, the suicide note mentioned being fed up with life due to numerous debts.

“She urged her two children to pay the debts from her teaching benefits,” Koskei said.

There have been numerous cases of teachers committing suicide this year with KUPPET noting that there for teachers to be cushioned during these difficult economic times caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Where do teachers lean on? They do not have counseling services in their place of work. The psychosocial support which is necessary for such a large workforce is not adequate as prescribed in the Teacher’s Service Commission structure,” Mr. Misori said.

According to Ms Martha Omollo, spokesperson for the Kenya National Teachers Pressure Group, workplace frustration in the form of intimidation from management, threats, abuses, delocalization, and family wranglings are among the leading causes of teacher suicide.
