Taita Taveta, MOI And Kabarak Universities Top In BIC Education Challenge
Taita Taveta University won the third edition of the BIC Education Challenge in Kenya this year with their project Tunza Mazingira, which addresses an environmental issue by collecting and reusing plastic bottles to make ottoman poufs.
Taita Taveta, the winner, received approximately Sh115,000. Moi University emerged second and received Sh69,000 for its Somesha Dada project, while Kabarak University placed third and received Sh46,000 for its Solar Powered Carbon Filter.
The competition brought together teams of students from six leading universities who set out to solve key problems.
It was co-organized by BIC East Africa and Enactus.
They were judged based on the project’s concept, market research, consumer needs, and feasibility.
Lacena Amanda, the lead student at Taita Taveta University, said the victory surprised her.
“You got to know the competition was tough by seeing how teams presented their projects,“ she said.
