Students Without IDs Urged to Apply for University Funding Ahead of Deadline

Thousands of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education class of 2022 students who have yet to register for university funding have 11 days remaining.
The application period began on July 31 and will end on September 7.

According to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, university and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students submitted 65,528 applications as of August 22.

Mr. Machogu stated that the ministry has adopted a public relations plan to educate and inform students about the new funding model.

The objective of the strategy is to encourage 140,107 students who have been selected for university programs and 145,060 prospective TVET students to submit funding applications.

According to Machogu, his ministry will disseminate pertinent information, communication, and educational materials through barazas.

In addition, students without national identification cards will be permitted to register for financial aid using their index numbers and birth certificates.

Since the law prohibits minors from entering into contracts, Mr. Machogu stated that education loans for those without identification cards will not be disbursed until the IDs are presented.

“Based on past experience, these students would receive their identification cards within the first year of study,” he explained.

In addition, he urged universities to allow students one month from the date of enrollment to apply for loans and scholarships.

Once the student is classified under the new funding model, the scholarship will be awarded and sent to the university or college, while the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) will provide funding once the student submits his or her ID.

“Universities and colleges have been informed of the scheme and are expected to admit the students,” the CS explained.
