On Sunday evening, February 12, students of Chepkorniswo Boys High School in Kapenguria, West Pokot County, staged a protest to demand reforms in their institution.

The students, who had left the school at 10:00 PM, spent the night outside Governor Simon Kachapin’s residence and were hoping to meet with him to discuss their grievances.

One of the major concerns of the students was the removal of the current principal, who they accused of mismanagement. The students claimed that the school had a shortage of teachers, leading to a lack of paid remedial classes.

Collins, one of the students, spoke to TV47 and stated that the only way for the principal to help the students was by leaving the school.

The students also raised the issue of the school’s lack of resources and support, including a shortage of English teachers and the absence of exercise books, despite the school fees being paid.

Another student spoke to TV47 and stated that the school should be considered an extra-county school and should have more resources and support.

In a separate incident, the students admitted to raiding a sugarcane plantation and stealing half of the sugarcane. The students claimed that they were hungry and the remedial fees they paid would be used to compensate for the sugarcane they stole.

“The whole school has only one English teacher yet it is an extra-county school. We do not have exercise books yet we pay school fees. The principal should just go,” added another.

Overall, the students of Chepkorniswo Boys High School were calling for wholesome reforms in the institution and seeking the governor’s help in addressing their concerns. The students were determined to fight for their rights and demand better conditions in their school.

They hoped that the governor would listen to their pleas and help bring about change in the school, making it a better place for students to learn and grow.
