A tragic incident occurred at Igunga Girls’ High School in Vihiga County, resulting in the death of a Form One student and injuries to three others on Tuesday, February 13.

The school’s layout is notable for its unique feature: a tarmac road intersects the premises, with classrooms situated on both sides. On that fateful morning, the four students were en route to a class, necessitating them to cross the road.

Regrettably, the young student, who had just begun her journey at the school, lost her life instantly, while the remaining three were promptly transported to Mbale Hospital in Vihiga. Following treatment, two were discharged, while the third required further medical attention due to severe injuries.

According to Zimbule, the superintendent at Mbale Hospital, “Two of the injured students were stable enough to be sent home, while the third remains under observation due to the severity of her injuries.”

Zimbule also mentioned that the deceased student’s mother had been informed of the tragic incident and was provided with counseling support by hospital psychologists to aid her in coping with the distressing news.

The loss of a student within the school environment is deeply saddening, and while details surrounding the incident are still forthcoming, efforts have been made by the school management and county authorities to communicate with the parents of the affected students.

In response to the incident, residents have urged the county government to install speed bumps on the tarmac road, emphasizing its location within a school compound.

Local law enforcement officials have initiated an investigation into the accident, as community members criticize drivers for reckless speeding, neglecting the safety of students despite the road’s proximity to the school.

Statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reveal alarming figures, with 563 fatalities recorded from road accidents between January 1 and February 11, 2024. Among these, pedestrians accounted for the highest number of deaths at 216, followed by passengers at 109.

Additionally, motor vehicle occupants, including drivers and passengers, collectively recorded 194 fatalities, emphasizing the need for enhanced road safety measures to prevent further loss of lives.
