Police have arrested a medical student who is accused of faking his own kidnapping in order to extort money from his parents.

Edwin Kamau, a 23-year-old Makindu Medical Training College student, is said to have gone into hiding last Sunday and blocked his father’s phone number before calling his mother and claiming to have been kidnapped.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), before hanging up on his mother, Kamau told her that his kidnappers demanded a ransom of Ksh.70,000 to release him.

“His distraught parents reported the matter to police officers who immediately launched a manhunt for the kidnappers.

“However, the calls persisted with Kamau telling his mother that his kidnappers were on the verge of eliminating him,” said the DCI in a statement.

In an attempt to save their son’s life, the parents sent the first installment of Ksh.10,000 on Wednesday, July 6, which Kamau, unbeknownst to them, would use to entertain himself and a woman he met at a Thika nightclub and who would later rob him.

According to the DCI, the woman is a member of the infamous drink-spiking syndicate.

“Immediately Kamau received the initial Ksh.10,000, he went to a club in Thika to irrigate his throat and make merry in the company of a babe he had met.

"And as fate would have it, the woman turned out to be a pishori admin who laced his drink with an unknown substance and stole the cash,” added the DCI.

After regaining consciousness, Kamau called his parents on Thursday, claiming that his ‘abductors’ were demanding money, and they sent him an additional Ksh.40,000.

However, Kamau was unaware that detectives were already following the number.

Detectives investigating the case apprehended him and questioned him, claiming he was attempting to recoup last semester’s squandered school fees.

“He further disclosed that he had been ‘kidnapped’ alongside two other students whose parents had paid their ransoms,” said the DCI.
