Somber Day in Gem as Thousands of Mourners Gathered For Magoha’s Final Journey
On a somber day in Gem, Kenya, thousands of mourners including prominent figures like former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga gathered to pay their final respects to the late Professor George Magoha, the former education Cabinet Secretary.
The late surgeon was widely revered and respected, and his passing has left a void in the hearts of many Kenyans.
The police officers tasked with maintaining order at the ceremony venues were kept busy as the crowds flowed in from far and wide, representing all walks of life.
The late Professor Magoha was to be laid to rest at his family home after a requiem mass at the Odera Akang’o University campus grounds in Yala town.
However, when the body arrived at the late Professor Magoha’s Umiru village home on Friday evening, angry villagers forced security personnel to open the gates and allow them to pay their last respects to their fallen son.
The Kenya Air Force helicopter carrying the remains of the late Professor Magoha landed at the Yala Township Primary School grounds in Gem constituency after 2.00 PM and was met with a solemn reception by hundreds of people, including Luo traditional dancers and the Starehe Boys Centre band.
After a short prayer by Father Clement Oluoch Goro of the Yala Catholic Parish, the body was transferred to a hearse and taken to St. Mary’s School Yala, where the late Cabinet Secretary served as the chairman of the board of management from 2016 until his death.
The principal of St. Mary’s School Yala, Victor Makanda, and the vice chairman of the board of governors, Maxwell Ogonda, paid tribute to the deceased former Cabinet Secretary for his contributions to the school.
They stated that under his chairmanship, Professor Magoha helped to improve the school’s infrastructure, including the construction of new dormitories, two of which were named after him and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The late Professor Magoha will be remembered as a visionary leader who dedicated his life to improving the education sector in Kenya. He was a true son of the soil, and his legacy will live on for generations to come. Despite the sadness that has enveloped the nation at this time, it is a comfort to know that Professor Magoha’s life and work will continue to inspire and guide us all.
