Six Arrested Over Death Of University Student

Six people have been detained by police in Kirinyaga County in connection with the murder of a university student on June 10, 2022.

Collins Kipchumba Kimeto, a Kirinyaga University software engineering student, died at a local hospital in Kutus after being kidnapped and robbed by the suspects on his way to a hostel.

The suspects allegedly hit him on the head with a blunt object, and he died a day later as a result of his injuries.

They are being held at the Kerugoya Police Station pending legal action.

According to Kirinyaga County Commissioner Moses Ivuto, the suspects were apprehended in various locations, with four apprehended in Murang’a County and the remaining two apprehended in Mwea, Kirinyaga County.

“The security officers have managed to arrest six key suspects who are under police custody. The six are connected to the heinous act which led to the rioting of the students on June 10,” Ivuto told journalists on Friday.

Ivuto, on the other hand, chose not to make the identities of the six public, implying that doing so would interfere with ongoing investigations.

Once police investigations are completed, the suspects are expected to be arraigned in court to face murder charges.

Kimeto’s murder sparked protests from his classmates, who cordoned off the Kagio-Kutus road and destroyed property, accusing police of laxity in tracking down his alleged killers and addressing regional insecurity.
