Simon Gicharu, MKU Founder, Appointed Chairman of Water Board
President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed Simon Gicharu, the founder of Mount Kenya University, to the Water Service Regulatory Board for a three-year term.
Gicharu’s appointment was announced in a gazette notice on August 5.
Since taking office in 2013, Uhuru has been a close friend of Gicharu.
Gicharu was appointed chairman of the Geothermal Development Company first, and then of the Rural Electrification Authority by the President.
Following the earlier expiration of his first term, during which he is credited with assisting in the connection of electricity to Kenyan public primary schools, Uhuru reappointed him for another three-year term in 2019.

Gicharu succeeds former Laikipia governor Joshua Irungu, who resigned in order to reclaim the seat.
MKU’s founder also serves on the board of Thika Water and Sewerage Company.
Others appointed by the President include Linus Gitahi, chairperson of the Board of Directors of Rivatex East Africa Limited for three years, Amb Dennis Awori, member of the State Corporations Advisory Committee for three years, and Donald Apollo Kokonya, non-executive chairperson of the Kenya Board of Mental Health for three years (3 years).
Others include John Waithaka, the Kenya Forestry Research Institute’s non-executive chairperson (3 years), and Nabila Khanbhai, the Kenya Tissue and Transplant Authority’s non-executive chairperson (3 years).
Kenya Water Towers Agency Board Chairperson Robert Mwangi Kariuki (3 years).
