Another one says: “It is the privilege of wisdom to listen.”An entire class of 461 students will attend the university to achieve their ambitions.A deputy in charge of boarding and another in charge of academics oversee the boarding and tuition sections, respectively.Mr Kipchumba Maiyo, the Kapsabet High School’s chief principal, does not brag. He described himself as “just a normal teacher who goes to class with chalk”.Maiyo is a diligent manager with 28 years of experience as a teacher. He claims to have always given his all in whatever he does.Another deputy is in charge of administration at the institution. His main responsibility is monitoring, which entails receiving real-time updates on everything going on at the school. He’s confident that his deputies have his back. Despite his confidence, he takes no chances. He often telephones his deputies.Last year, about 99,000 pupils requested to join Kapsabet, according to the principal, who led the school from provincial to national status. However, the school can only accommodate 500 students.President Kenyatta bestowed the Order of the Grand Warrior on Mr Maiyo in 2020. He dedicated the honor to his teachers, whom he credited with helping him produce “men."“I didn’t expect this. The issuance of titles doesn’t excite me,” he said. “For me, it is service to the people that matters. I understand that I am just a captain steering a large ship.Mr Maiyo explained that the school has an open-door policy, which allows anyone to enter into any office at any time.“The teachers we have here are selfless. The students are disciplined. And, the results are sterling,” he said, noting that his secret to success is teamwork.First and foremost, Kapsabet’s success may be ascribed to the boys’ excellent discipline. He noted that Kapsabet has not had any severe disciplinary concerns in nearly 25 years.There has also been a greater emphasis on individual students.“As we sharpen the head, we cut the tail by organising remedial classes by coaching these children who are weak, to push their grades,” he explained.He continued: “There’s nothing else that is extraordinary. Most of these boys had 400 marks in KCPE. This is an equivalent of an A. So, really, they walk in as A students. There’s nothing peculiar when they walk out with As. Here, we only contain their character because disciplined learners will yield.”“You give us A, we exit A. No secret; here we work hard. It’s sheer hard work,” he added.But Kapsabet Boys isn’t only about schoolwork.
