Science Laboratories a Requirement For JSS Approval, Says Magoha

Professor George Magoha, Cabinet Secretary, urges private institutions seeking to admit Junior secondary school students to guarantee they have a ministry-approved science laboratory.

Speaking in Kericho County on September 3, Magoha noted that the new criteria target private schools because most public schools already fulfill this standard.

He noted that the government has already discussed the matter with private school owners, who committed to complying with the mandate by January 2023.

The CS noted that most schools have complied while others are still in the process, stating that the schools that have not yet complied have been granted further time to do so.

Professor Magoha stated that the laboratories would be especially valuable for the practical component of science-related courses.

Prof. Magoha stated that the students scheduled to take exams in December are well-prepared, the majority have completed their curriculum, and the government will address any issues that may arise.

The CS was addressed in Kericho after holding a consultative meeting with county officials at the offices of the county commissioner, where he confirmed that 75 percent of CBC classrooms in the county had been completed.

He said approximately 90 percent of the classrooms would be completed by the end of Saturday.

The announcement by Magoha comes days after the ministry extended by 10 days the selection period for junior secondary schools for sixth-grade students.

After taking national exams in November 2022, the first Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) cohort will enter junior high school in January.

As a result of teachers’ increased efforts to complete the curriculum on time, tests would be administered earlier than originally planned.

Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations are scheduled to commence in November 2019 and conclude in December 2022.

Previously, Magoha said that pupils would remain in school during a rerun.

“The students can be asked to play games and stay in their hostels while other Kenyans exercise their democratic right in the other part of the school,” he stated.

Students remained in school during the August 29 gubernatorial elections in Mombasa and Kakamega.
