Schools Submerged In Busia County as Widespread Flooding Hits Lake Victoria

Learning at St. Mary’s ACK Namabusi Secondary School in Budalangi, Busia County, has come to a standstill as the school faces indefinite closure due to severe flooding caused by the backflow from Lake Victoria. This closure is part of the widespread disruption caused by massive flooding in the region.

The impact of the floods extends to at least 8 schools in the proximity of Lake Victoria, rendering them inaccessible.

St. Mary’s Ack Namabusi Secondary School is one of the affected institutions, leaving over 100 students stranded at home since the official school reopening on January 8, 2024.

In response to the crisis, the school management is actively seeking alternative solutions.

The proposal includes relocating the affected students to Musoma ACK Primary School, a neighboring institution, starting from the upcoming Monday. This move aims to ensure that the students can resume their studies despite the challenges posed by the floods.
