Since the early 1960s, the role of first ladies in Kenya has evolved considerably. Beyond their traditional duties of accompanying the Head of State to official events, they now play a more active role in advocating for social issues and participating in political campaigns.
This article examines the post-primary institutions that have shaped the careers of four Kenyan first ladies, starting from the time of the second President, Daniel Moi.
Rachel Ruto, the current first lady, started her academic journey at Likuyani Primary School before moving on to Butere Girls High School. She later pursued a Bachelor of Education (Arts) degree at Kenyatta University in Kiambu.
After graduation, she worked as a teacher for some time before leaving the profession to focus on her family. Rachel is also involved in evangelical work and heads the Joyful Women’s Organisation (Joywo), where she champions women’s economic empowerment. She recently launched the Mama Cycling Initiative to promote healthy living through physical exercise.
Lena Moi, the late wife of President Daniel Arap Moi, attended Tenwek Girls Secondary School in Bomet County. She was also a teacher but left the profession to raise her family.
Lucy Kibaki, who passed away in 2016, attended Alliance Girls High School in Kikuyu between 1953 and 1956. She was among the first students to gain admission to the national school, which was the only institution admitting girls across the country at the time.
After completing her studies, Lucy became a tutor and taught at various institutions, including Kamwenja Teachers and Kiambu Colleges. She always maintained ties with her alma mater and wrote letters to her former principal.
Margaret Kenyatta, the wife of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, attended St. Andrews School, Turi, in Molo, Nakuru County. She later studied for a Bachelor of Education at Kenyatta University. During her tenure as the first lady, Margaret spearheaded several initiatives, including the Beyond Zero Campaign and Johari Beads Initiative.
