One student died and three others were hospitalized at around 4 p.m after a toilet at Nyabondo high school in Kisumu’s Nyakach sub-county caved.
The three students who were rescued were taken to Nyabondo mission hospital, where they are being treated.
According to Vincent Kodiera, the toilet collapsed with four students inside, one of whom died and is currently being retrieved from where he is trapped.

And On Sunday, a 20-year-old Chekalin High School student from Kakamega County drowned in the Kipkaren River while on a fishing trip.
Divers have begun searching for Victor Aswan’s body, who drowned on Sunday around 2 p.m.
According to witnesses, Aswani was on a fishing trip with his sister when he decided to swim in the swollen river, but he was overwhelmed by the powerful waves.
“My brother and I came to the river to fish. After some time, he said he wanted to swim, so he jumped into the river, but he drowned,” said Vancy, the victim’s sister.
The body was discovered around 5 p.m. on Sunday, but it vanished moments later in the deep waters, according to residents.
The victim’s clothes and fish were discovered on the riverbank.
The incident was reported to the Turbo Police Department. According to police, the divers are scouring the river in search of Aswani’s body.
According to a World Health Organization report, an estimated 236,000 people drown each year, and drowning is one of the top ten causes of death for children and youth aged 1 to 24 years.
More than 90% of drowning cases in low and middle-income countries occur in rivers, lakes, wells, and domestic water storage vessels, with children and adolescents in rural areas being disproportionately affected.

All governments, civil society organizations, and individuals are urged to emphasize the importance of immediate, coordinated, and multi-sectoral action on proven measures such as installing barriers controlling access to water, teaching people how to swim, water safety, and safe rescue skills.
Other initiatives include training bystanders in safe rescue and resuscitation, as well as better flood risk management.
