School Resumption Postponed in Nairobi Due to Opposition Protests
Some schools in Nairobi and its surrounding areas have decided to delay the resumption of classes after the mid-term break from today to tomorrow, due to safety concerns stemming from planned opposition demonstrations.
The Ministry of Education’s calendar indicates that students should resume classes today, however, many parents and teachers have voiced their concerns that such a move could put the safety of children at risk, particularly if the planned demonstrations turn violent.
Parents of children travelling through the city have expressed fear that transportation could be affected by the demonstrations, causing inconveniences. Learners who live in Nairobi but attend schools in the countryside are also likely to be affected.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga has called for demonstrations across the country to put pressure on the government to reduce the cost of living and meet other demands.
Last week, the chair of the National Parents Association called for dialogue between Mr Odinga and President William Ruto to avoid a crisis that could harm school children.
Chair of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, Omboko Milemba, had previously called for the Education Ministry to defer the opening of schools, but no word has yet been issued.
Some schools have decided to change the reporting date due to concerns over the planned demonstrations, while others, like State House Girls High School, have resumed early to ensure the safety of their students.
The Chief Principal of Kenya High School, Virginia Wahome, informed parents of the change in the reporting date via text message, while the Senior Head Teacher of Makini School, John Muriithi, also notified parents of the shift.
Nairobi Primary School has, however, decided not to change its opening date, with boarders returning to school tomorrow and day scholars resuming on Tuesday.
Parents and teachers are particularly concerned about the safety of students in light of the heavy presence of heavily armed General Service Unit officers patrolling State House Road, where many schools are situated.
The decision to delay resumption of classes has therefore been made to protect the safety of learners.
