After a fire destroyed St. Luke Catholic Primary School on Sunday night, January 2, property of unknown value was razed to the ground.
The fire broke out in the middle of the night, just as the school administration was preparing to welcome students on the first day of school.
The school, however, stated that the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
By the end of the second school term, over 31 schools had been destroyed by fires that were allegedly started by students in collusion with staff and outsiders.
The country’s recent spate of school fires has prompted parents and other education stakeholders to demand that the government provide solutions.
In cases where the property was destroyed, schools, on the other hand, were not lenient with parents and guardians. Parents were forced to pay thousands of dollars to aid in the reconstruction of the infrastructure.
Kenyans also chastised the government for failing to tighten its grip on students, despite Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education, Prof. George Magoha, issuing a directive on the fire incidents.
Prof Magoha stated that the government would not accept responsibility for the losses incurred by schools as a result of the recent increase in fire incidents, which saw dormitories, laboratories, and classes burn.
The CS stated that the government would not contribute to the rebuilding of student-burned dormitories.
Magoha urged teachers and parents to be tough on students and vigilant in preparing them for life, as well as to feel free to discipline the children.
He also suggested that chaplains be stationed in schools to combat rising levels of indiscipline.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has warned students against participating in arson attacks and has stated that they will archive and consolidate charges for any student involved in a crime, which will be reflected in their Certificate of Good Conduct.
