School Games: Nairobi’s Volleyball Champions Soweto and Ruthimitu Reach Nationals
Soweto Academy and Ruthimitu qualified for the National School Games after winning their separate finals at Lenana School in Nairobi on Sunday.
Ruthimitu defeated Hospital Hill 3-1 (24-28, 25-18, 25-23, 25-16) to win the boys’ competition, while Soweto defeated Brown Hill 3-1 (25-23, 25-14, 22-25, 25-13) to win the girls’ competition.
According to Citizen Digital, head coach Wycliffe Nyongesa was pleased with the victory but dissatisfied with his team’s play in the third set due to what he deemed minor errors.
“I will create more time with my girls and examine the areas where we need to correct our errors, particularly in ball service.”
“We hit the majority of our shots from outside the court, granting our opponents the third set.
"I am going to prepare the girls mentality to prepare for even five sets in the national competitions so that if it happens they still maintain the same energy,” said Nyongesa.
High ridge defeated Dagoretti mixed 2-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-19) to place third in a three-game playoff series.
In the boys’ category, Ruthimitu began on a poor note, losing the first set, but turned things around in subsequent sets to secure the championship.
At the same venue, Hospital Hill defeated Aquinas Boys by a score of 40-23 to advance to the national handball championships.
Ben Ngonyi, captain of the defending champions Hospital Hill, was pleased with the victory but unsatisfied with the score, believing they might have done better.
“We knew we would win the game as we had mentally prepared and the motivation was high.
"We were a little bit sloppy in defence but we will rectify the mistakes to make sure as we go to the nationals we take home the glory,” said Ngonyi.
Dagoretti High defeated Nairobi School 27-18 to place third overall.
In the girls’ category, Dagoretti mixed defeated Buruburu girls by a score of 37-09 to storm to the national championship, while Pangani girls defeated Mbagathi girls by a score of 8-6 to claim third place.
Only the victor of each sports bar rugby will advance to the nationals, which will be held in Nakuru from September 8-13.
In Kisumu County, Maseno School successfully defended its crown with a 21-0 victory over Thur Dibuoro Secondary in Saturday’s championship game.
As the first school to win the county championship without surrendering a try, Maseno created history by finishing the games undefeated.
The hosts began the games on a winning note, having won all of their group matches. Maseno defeated both Nyamasaria and Ngere by scores of 29-0 and 27-0, respectively.
In the seven-a-side category, Maseno School advanced to the semifinals after trouncing Ngere 52-0 in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, they defeated Onjiko 21-0 before defeating Thur Dibuoro by the same score in the championship match.
