School Fees Increases Despite Warnings From Education Ministry and TSC.
Several schools have defied the Ministry of Education’s fee guidelines by levying additional fees and demanding prompt payment.
Parents have been asked to pay remedial, tuition, national exam, teacher motivation, or trip fees in the affected schools. In the case of those whose infrastructure was destroyed by fires, parents may be required to pay up to Sh9,000.
Most parents who spoke to Saturday Nation said the charges were imposed without their input.
Despite warnings from the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Kenya Parents Association chairperson Nicholas Maiyo claims that some schools are defiant.
Kitale Secondary, Kathiiani Girls High, and Uthiru Girls High are among the schools whose parents have reported to the association that they have demanded extra money, according to Maiyo.
Uthiru requires students to pay a remedial fee of Sh2,500 per term. Despite warnings from the Ministry and the TSC, some of the schools have continued to flout the fee regulations.
“Schools can only charge extra fees with permission from the ministry,” said Mr Maiyo
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha and Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Jwan had previously warned that heads who charged excessive fees would be reported to the TSC for disciplinary action.
The association stated that they are currently compiling a list of the schools so that it can be forwarded to the Ministry of Education for action.
Kisii School parents have also complained that the school is demanding Sh4,000 from each KCSE candidate for a three-day trip.
