Samburu County Tops List with 50% Teenage Pregnancy Rate
Samburu, West Pokot, and Marsabit have the highest teenage pregnancy rates, according to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey of 2022.
A recent report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) reveals that half of the teens in Samburu County have experienced pregnancy.
According to the 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (2022 KDHS) that was released on Monday, fifty percent of 15- to 19-year-old women in Samburu have previously given birth.
The data also indicate that West Pokot County has the second-highest rate of adolescent pregnancies, with 36% of 15-to-19-year-olds having given birth.

Marsabit follows in third place with 29%, while Narok and Meru are positioned at 28% and 24%, respectively.
The report reveals that Nyeri, Nyandarua, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Vihiga, and Nairobi have the lowest adolescent pregnancy rate.
The sample for the 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) report was derived from the Kenya Household Master Sample Frame (K-HMSF).
Literacy rate
The report indicates that 15 to 19-year-olds in Samburu have the highest literacy rate at 50%, followed by West Pokot at 36% and Marsabit at 29%.
“Samburu, West Pokot, Marsabit, and Narok counties have the highest percentages of women aged 15 to 19 who have ever been pregnant,” the report states.
The lowest number was recorded in Nyeri, Nyandarua, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Vihiga, and Nairobi, according to the report.
Nyeri recorded 5 per cent, Nyandarua 5 per cent, Kirinyaga 7 per cent, Murang’a 7 per cent, Vihiga 8 per cent and Nairobi City 8 per cent.
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders, implemented the KDHS in 2022.
The collection of data happened between February 17 and July 31, 2022.
The sample size was calculated to be 42,300 households, and 25 households were selected per cluster, resulting in 1,692 clusters across the country, with 1,026 clusters in rural areas and 666 clusters in urban areas.
